INTRODUCTION
So why? Well I moved to Long Melford with my brother Ian, wife Marilyn and family in November 1985 and became Innkeeper of the George and Dragon. We had all served our time, as it were, and Greene King gave us complete independence to turn a completely derelict village Inn into one of the area’s premier venues. I soon purchased a home for my family to free-up rooms at the pub for the bed and breakfast trade and moved to Ballingdon Street, another derelict home that required a re-build and which we were to discover used to be a pub, the Railway Tavern. By 1987 I had become Chairman of the local Licensed Victuallers Association and with access to their records (founded 1909) decided to one day write the story of our pubs and clubs and of those that managed and the locals that inhabited them.
So, again, why? Because nobody else had! Sudbury, despite being but a small market town, hosts so many writers and historians who have enriched our knowledge of our history and its people, but to date no book dedicated to our pubs. However, with a busy life as a licensee (I retired aged seventy) and the pursuit of other pastimes, rugby, freemasonry, writing, and many a goodly lunch in great company I seemed always too busy to further research and pen this project.
Then came the lockdown Covid-19 virus. No extended luncheons, no holding court in the pub or the famed Institute Club (home of the clinically daft and insane) and no freemasonry or rugby. So finally many boxes of files were perused, a small number of other dear friends and local historians enlisted and this is the result. On my part I have loved my four decades as an Innkeeper and licensee and hope, in a small way, that this account of our wonderful iconic Inns and Taverns will encourage the reader to both visit and enjoy their “local” before they are lost to history and become but a memory of gentler times.
